Good for you. =D I had a mail-in ballot and also voted early. For Obama. Rock on!

The fact that ANYONE gay would vote for McCain terrifies me. But it does happen. D: SCARY. Good for you for being smart. XP

Ditto... *sighs* But sometimes brains are forgotten when it comes to politics.

For some of us, we put matters of country ahead of sexuality.

[identity profile] ryosato.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
...Okay... so why would anyone vote for McCain? XD;;

I guess my stance is that I wouldn't vote for someone who was openly racist, and I wouldn't vote for someone openly homophobic, either. I don't know why anyone would vote for someone that considers them sub-human. :\

[identity profile] donotttrust.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
John McCain isn't and has never been a racist. Sarah Palin on the other hand, seems to have these things simmering just below the surface, but until she says so, she isn't.

As to the homophobic issue, John McCain and Barack Obama, during the debates, we asked outright if they believed marriage was between one man and one woman, and both agreed. As far as I'm concerned both of them fail to address what I feel is an injustice. Supporting Civil Unions is supporting a separate but equal type doctrine, which is highly ironic coming from a black man. Coming from John McCain, it's expected with all the pandering to the Republican base he has been doing since January.

So on that issue, they both cancelled each other out. Luckily for myself, I wasn't going to base my vote on that issue. It didn't even make my top ten. But if you are going to accuse one candidate or the other for failing to see the GLBT community as human, you actually would have to accuse both of them of that.

And furthermore, this country may seem like it's moving forward with it's (as of right now) impending election of a black man as its president, it isn't. Because we are YEARS away from any mainstream candidate with a shot at the White House ever saying they support us. YEARS.

So fuck them all in that regard.

[identity profile] ryosato.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Obama isn't ideal. But Obama AND Biden have said they would vote no against Prop 8 and other such amendments and have voted against such things on a national scale. Palin thinks you can pray away gay and is against equal rights on EVERY LEVEL for the GLTB community. McCain seems to be on her side of it - but of course his opinion doesn't really matter THAT much since he'll probably die and leave her in charge anyway. XP

But this is where I drop the subject because starting political fights in someone else's LJ isn't exactly polite. XP;;

[identity profile] donotttrust.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind discussing this with you, and I don't think we're even close to starting a political fight. I'm not very thin-skinned, especially on this issue.

And McCain's health being an issue seems moot at this point. All of the candidates carry out schedules that no normal person should be able to for this long. He has shown to be resilient even as he ages, and there are no signs of him dying.

As to either candidate supporting a proposition or an amendment, ultimately the voting on such an issue falls to the legislature either on the State or Federal level. If you were concerned with that, then your choice of (State) Represenative(s) and or (State) Senator(s) becomes the issue.

Furthermore, I voted for John McCain not Sarah Palin. Just like you voted for Barack Obama, not Joe Biden. I'm more concerned with who's at the top of the ticket. Even in the event Sarah Palin did ascend to the presidency upon McCain's death, I wouldn't be worried. At most, she'd inherit a Largely Democratic House of Represenatives and Senate, and John McCain's cabinent. Most of whom actually do the research and governing of the country. Also, I'd imagine, come the next election, if she showed herself to be incompetant, then she'd be tossed out for the next person.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You guys can debate her, I don't mind.

And for my two cents, I vote for (And against) the vice president as much as the president in this election, because, as...unfortunate as it is, in BOTH cases it's a very real possibility that they may come to be in power. To think it's not is simply naivety.

[identity profile] ryosato.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I concur.

And sorry. XD;; I don't... MEAN to get into this stuff. But I tend to have a big mouth (which you probably noticed at the slash panels XP) on issues I think are important.

I just am honestly baffled and beyond understanding why anyone who isn't just STUPID voted for McCain/Palin. They're homophobic. She kills endangered species from aircraft and is anti-choice, anti-gay, and is so extreme in her religion that a priest from Africa blessed her AGAINST WITCHES when she got her position in Alaska! And in her church they "pray away the gay" and speak in tongues. UHHHHHHHHHH. NO THANKS GUISE.

McCain has all sorts of his own issues but he doesn't seem as batshit crazy as Palin. With him it's more like... he's 95% the same as Bush. And Bush has totally screwed all of us.

So. Yep. I don't think anyone could make me understand. :\

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't...like...pre-Palin I didn't WANT McCain but I wasn't violently opposed to McCain. I have preferred Obama since day one, but he wasn't...just...augh, her. I can't stand her, and what she stands for and everything about her. And yeah I'd rather vote for...shit Joe the Plumber pretty much then let her even near that power.

[identity profile] ryosato.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was always for Obama. I don't think I would EVER vote republican. I might vote third-party, but not republican. XP But he was sort of... meh, typical republican crap. But then SHE came along and I was like WHAT. SERIOUSLY!? SEEEEEEERIOUSLY?! WHAT?! SERIOUSLY?! THAT'S YOUR CHOICE?! The DISNEY VILLAIN?! She's like a freaking DISNEY VILLAIN. She hates gay people, women, and lets her employees get away with SHOOTING WOLF PUPPIES IN THE HEAD. ILLEGALLY.

I'm like WHAAAAAAAAAAAT.

It's so ridiculous it could be a movie. I sometimes wonder if it is. XP

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't vote it, but I also didn't care to passionatly who won because whichever...he'd be better then Bush.

But then yeah. That.

[identity profile] ryosato.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh okay, cool. A lot of people end up with the yelling, which I try to avoid. XP;; But in that case...

McCain supported 95% of Bush's initiatives... which obviously totally screwed our country. So on that point, I'm like "Uh. Why would anyone vote for him?" And then I personally just refuse to vote for anyone that shows signs of racism or homophobia. If both main candidates did, I'd vote for a third party. But that's me.

I am more concerned with the top of the ticket, but I do pay attention to the VP, too. Palin is CRAZY. I don't know that anyone that's done their research on her can reach any other conclusion. And the VP DOES have power. It's not like they're just an understudy. She's an EXTREMELY conservative right-wing religious nut. So uhm. No thanks there.

As for her not doing much damage, or not getting re-elected... look at what Bush continues to do even to this day. :\

[identity profile] donotttrust.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"McCain supported 95% of Bush's Initiatives...which obviously totally screwed our country"

I don't want this to come across as defensive or with ill-intent, but it's the internet, and sometimes intent gets lost in translation, but I need more than that to debate you on the validity of that argument. It's be helpful if you could list what initiatives and how they "screwed" our country. It's hard to counter a vague cover-all statement.

As to Sarah Palin, I don't agree with her personal opinions, or even her lifestyle, but as a politician, in her service to Alaska, nothing (I have read has shown) she has done (in her way too brief stint) as Governor shows her to extend her beliefs into her way of governing negatively. I'd give her a chance if she inherited the position, and if she failed to live up to the job, I'd vote against her the first chance I got.

Even if she wanted to do much damage, as you say, ultimately the people of this country would decide to keep her or not. Bush was elected twice because enough people believed he would be the better man for the job in each contest. And while I didn't agree with his supporters the first time ( I wasn't old enough to vote in Gore v Bush) and I certainly didn't agree with them the second time (My first election to vote in yay!), the country decided so you just have to suck it up and wait for the next election.

Adding to that point, even if a President shows himself to be lacking early on, he/she and his/her party would pay for it come the mid-term elections. President Clinton and President Bush II served two term presidencies and when the people lost faith in them, they sweeped out the members of their party in Congress to put them into political check. This happened to Clinton in '94 and to Bush in '06. So it isn't all hopeless. But then, the blame for failing to correct their policies lies to the Congress, and in the case of Bush II, the current Congress has failed miserably in even beginning to reverse some of Bush's international policies. So there is blame to go around on both sides for our current predicaments as a country.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Even if she wanted to do much damage, as you say, ultimately the people of this country would decide to keep her or not.

If, worst case scenario, McCain wins tonight and dies tomorrow from a massive coronary out of the joy of winning, (Or if that would change things, say, after his coming into office) we would be stuck with her for FOUR years, unless we found something to impeach her for. And even then, obviously, impeaching isn't going to GET her out, since it didn't get Clinton out.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
John McCain isn't and has never been a racist

Weren't you the one who told me he was horribly racist toward Asians?

And you know that's not why I'm voting, BUT you have a lot more wiggle room in that reguard with Obama then with McCain.

[identity profile] donotttrust.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
McCain obviously harbors bad feelings about his treatment as a Prisoner of War, and has made slurs in the past, from what I've read, but none of his actions, policies, or agendas have shown to be racist.

You and I have let a few racial slurs fly, but I'd never consider you or I racist.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Although it could be argued over the IMPORTANCE of it, whether it's true or not is the argument at hand.

Making racist comment is sorta part of what being racist is. Call a spade a spade. (And yeah, I try to avoid it, but let's not lie, everyone has their moments)

I don't HATE you. I'd hate a lot of the country for that. I just think it was a hugely dumb move.

LOL IS THIS TO MY OLD COMMENT? oh i know you don't hate me (or something), i was just bein silly. I deleted it cause, well, yeah fff.

I voted Obama last week too. This old lady made Nic and I take off our politic buttons before going through. I wonder if she told that to anyone wearing an Obama shirt... caaause that would be pretty funny.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
XD nekkid tiem.

[identity profile] submit-yourself.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm election... yay~... Shit we can't even go into the student union today because it's a voting place, sadly much of the campus is wearing their chosen candidate on there shirts... and yes they did ask them to remove their shirts (and turn them inside out)

This entire election... its perturbing me I'll be glad when it's over. I hate elections for the simple fact that it brings out so many stupid people in the world... (more then usual politics)

[identity profile] optical-nerve.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OH FUCK NVM YEAH.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Gotta give you props for the research I know you put in. And here's to hoping this election's spite and ire died when it's over ASAP.

[identity profile] optical-nerve.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
POLITICS CONFUSE MY BRAIN BECAUSE YOU CAN NEVER 100% LIKE A PERSON. GODDAMMIT. Well whomever wins wins, I just want them to put our country on a good track.

[identity profile] becominganhero.livejournal.com 2008-11-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Jess already said, but we voted like a week ago. What pisses me off though, is that Mom called and she's like "You voted right?" "Yup." "You didn't vote for Obama right?" "...no..."

It pisses me off that I MUST VOTE REPUBLICAN and it pisses me off more that I can't talk to my mom about politics. :/

[identity profile] lefthooktohead.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I just play a "Rick-ist", what I self-proclaim it. I just don't talk politics. I totally shut my grandmother down on who I'm going to vote for once. :p

[identity profile] becominganhero.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason I didn't tell her "nunya" was because I knew if I'd refused to tell her, she'd know I'd have voted Obama, and I really didn't want to get into a political argument with her >w
