Oh fuck, it's sum politics.

Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled today. This is history, this is...down right amazing. I have not missed that at all. But there's also probably approximately 89753 post on your flist about all that, so here's something diffrent.

I'm also SCARED.

Because Obama isn't in fact Jesus. And I see things like...the posters at Walmart, and even some of my friends post and I'm happy to see all these posts of joy BUT...he's human. And not only is he human, he's a human politician. A politician who's made it clear he wants to work together.

And working together means everything won't be ok with in a few months. It means some things won't be fixed the way us hippies want ever. And even if he can (And let's not even think if he can't) it's going to be a slow and steady process.

And I know everyone's going to say "I know this." because logically everyone does...but I think a lot of people in their heart think that Obama's going to become president and magically wave a wand and everything wrong will be better.

And I'm afraid of the backlash, and the fact that it will be Obama's fault, and seen as Obama's fault, that people held clearly unrealistic hopes for him.

ALSO!

I am so fucking scared for Obama that I don't know what to fucking do.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there's that fear too. Like...oh man I can't even...I just try not to think about it.

I am stressed the hell out, hon. I just fear that if anything happens to this man during presidency, it would be the catalysts for another Civil War or even worse, a Race War.

And even if he doesn't get hurt, which I am praying that he DOESN'T EVER get hurt...

What if he fucks up? People will hate Blacks again...

This is stressful. This is stressful.

I think there is change already. I think a lot of people are filled with hope, and that motivates people. No, things won't become happy and beautiful overnight, and some aspects of what he (and the people) wants may never happen, but we'll start moving in the right direction as far as everyone I love and care about is concerned.

I am quite scared that people are treating him as a messiah, though. That's just.... wrong.

Yeah I agree with that a lot, I just....am worried about the fact that people are one step away from canonizing him it feels like.

You know, I was rewatching The Queen the other night and the final exchange between Queen Elizabeth II and Tony Blair (Cited below) perfectly summed up what I feel is going to happen to Saint Obama...and it will be deserved. He cultivated a cult-like persona to help aid in spreading his message and get him elected...but it will be his undoing. He attracted fanatics, and when they feel wronged by him they will pursue him in harm, just like they pursued him in favor.

HM Queen Elizabeth II: Oh, really? You don't think that what affection people once had for m... for this 'institution' has been diminished?
Tony Blair: No, not at all. You are more respected now than ever.
HM Queen Elizabeth II: I gather some of your closest advisors were less fulsome in their support.
Tony Blair: One or two... But as a leader, I could never have added my voice to that chorus.
HM Queen Elizabeth II: Because you saw all those headlines and you thought: 'One day that might happen to me'...
Tony Blair: Oh... er...
HM Queen Elizabeth II: ... and it will, Mr. Blair. Quite suddenly and without warning...

Good; I thought I was the only one who felt that way.

You're not, not by far.

Also, did you get your poster?

Oh fuck, I forgot to tell you. Yes, I did. Thank you so much for sending it! The stickers were also adorable.

:D I'm glad it got there, and I'm sorry for the tattered edges.

=\ Everything you've said is totally true. I figure that every President has an initial honeymoon period (even Bush had approval ratings in the high 70s once!) and even Obama's has to end someday, even if it is a little longer than previous ones.

I'm just glad he wasn't assassinated. So many of my friends (and even my mother!) were convinced he was going to be murdered before the election even took place that they wanted to bet on it.

[also I am extremely sorry for probably flooding your inbox with screwed up rp replies from my non-rp account. I kind of am really absent minded. ^^;]
