I feel like I constantly have things to post, and yet open up my posting window and...nada.

I think I have realized a difference between Mary Sues and good characters with angsty pasts. In a good character it's back story. In a Mary Sue it's plot.

In other words, in a good character it's something that's developed and there, but not something that's always present. It's not ignored but it's not like "Hi my names is Mary and I need you to walk on egg shells and will talk about my issues all the time."

And with a Mary Sue well...it IS that way.
