Wanna publish with Tokyo Pop?
Jun. 3rd, 2008 07:13 pmYou're wrong. Even if you think you do wanna publish with em. Because you really shouldn't.
There new contest is pretty much a big screw over for any artist. It pretty much states that they have the right to look at your stuff, ask you to make them a full pilot, but then possibly reject you without pay (NOT common practice. You should get your pilot fee even if they decided not to continue working with you.)
And if you DO get the joy of being picked, you have to sign over ALL rights. Including, if they deem it, having your name attached to the project. Pretty much they can jack your ideas, and only have to pay you minimum fees (Including making movies out of it, having it redrawn by another artist, etc)
Check these links for more info:
http://www.unscrewedcomic.com/article.php?story=tokyopop The Unscrewed article (Unscrewed is a website that helps industry people from getting...well, screwed)
Some LJ's with more commentary:

Plus I have my own opinion on TP's handling of the advertising of their Original Ameri-manga, but that's another story for another time.
